  • n., A high-density, direct access, digital storage medium consisting of a specially coated disk on which data are encoded in a pattern of tiny pits burned into the surface with a laser, to be read by a device that reflects a laser beam off the pitted surface, then decoded by a microprocessor into digital signals.
